Ululah Lagoon: Mum’s ‘heartbreaking scream’ after toddler drowns at Maryborough

A toddler has died after being pulled unresponsive from a lagoon in Queensland’s Fraser Coast region.

A witness told 7NEWS.com.au screams could be heard amid a frantic search for the boy – believed to be about 18 months old – before he was found in Maryborough’s Ululah Lagoon.

She said she went to the area to help look for the boy after a post on a community Facebook page pleaded for information on his whereabouts.

Police and other community members were also searching, she said.

“I was up the hill a bit when I heard the screams from the mother,” the witness said.

‘Heartbreaking scream’

“It was a heartbreaking scream. I knew straight away, when she screamed, that it was bad. When I got there, they literally pulled him out and started the CPR.”

She said family members, who had been attending a gathering at the park, had found the child in the water.

They pulled him “lifeless and blue” from the lagooon, she said.

Emergency response

“The mother was just having a breakdown,” she said. “The paramedics took about five to 10 minutes to get there, after the bub was pulled out.”

Paramedics worked on the boy for a short time before taking him to hospital, where he was declared dead.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
