Talks with the European Union to resolve the Northern Ireland Brexit crisis have hit a dead end, Liz Truss has claimed, as she justified government plans to override swathes of the deal it signed three years ago.

The European Union will launch legal action against Britain tomorrow for violating the terms of withdrawal agreement after Boris Johsnon unveiled legislation to unilaterally curtail the influence of Brussels in Northern Ireland.

The foreign secretary claimed today that the government had no choice but to act after the EU refused to change the text of the protocol during eighteen months of negotiations. Truss said the EU had no justification for legal action, arguing that the UK’s plans would not disadvantage the bloc.
