Investigations continue after a weekend of tragedy on East Yorkshire’s roads

Police investigations are continuing today, following a weekend of tragedy on East Yorkshire’s roads.

Two people sadly lost their lives near Driffield in unrelated collisions this weekend, while another 18-year-old man is fighting for his life in hospital. A further collision also took place yesterday (Sunday, June 12) at midday near Roos, resulting in a man sustaining injuries which are not thought to be life-threatening.

One of the young men, who sadly lost their lives, was a 17-year-old, named by police as Jack Stabler. Jack was pronounced dead at the scene of the B1249 crash in the early hours of Saturday morning and another 18-year-old man was taken to Hull Royal Infirmary, where he remains in critical condition.

This crash took place around 1.40am and involved a Vauxhall Corsa and a Skoda Fabia on the Scarborough Road close to Driffield. Police closed the road for several hours as they investigated the incident.

A Humberside Police spokesman said: “We are saddened to announce the death of 17-year-old Jack Stabler, who passed away following a two-vehicle collision on the B1249 near to Driffield on Saturday, June 11, 2022. Another 18 year old man remains in a critical condition at Hull Royal Infirmary.

“Both families are being supported by specially trained officers and they ask that their privacy is respected at this very difficult time. Our thoughts are with Jack’s family at this incredibly difficult time.”

Humberside Police are today appealing for more information for anyone who happened to see both cars around this time. They have asked witnesses to quote log 55 11/06/22 when reporting information to 101.

Officers are also investigating a crash that took place just before 8am on Friday, where a 23-year-old man died after his car crashed into a tree near Driffield in East Yorkshire. The car is thought to have left Driffield Road, between Kilham and Rudston Parva, and hit the tree.

Despite the best efforts of members of the public to attempt to save the man, he tragically died from the injuries he sustained at the scene. The family of the victim have since been informed while police are urging witnesses to come forward.

A police spokesman said: “Investigations are underway after a man sadly died in a collision in East Yorkshire on Friday. The collision took place at around 7.55am on Driffield Road between Kilham and Rudston Parva, when a black Seat Leon left the road and collided with a tree.

“A 23-year-old man, who was driving the car at the time of the collision, was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene. His family have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers, our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.

“Officers would like to thank the members of the public who came to the assistance of the driver involved in the collision. We are now appealing for anyone who saw the collision, or for anyone who has dashcam footage or saw the vehicle prior to the collision to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to call our non-emergency 101 line, quoting log 91 of June 10.”

Yesterday, around midday, eyewitnesses reported a collision near Roos, which resulted in a man being injured. The incident occurred at the junction of Rectory Road, Aldbrough Road, North End and Burton Road, which was closed to motorists by police shortly after.

An eyewitness at the scene said: “I was pulling out of the junction just after the crash had happened. The quadbiker seemed seriously hurt as he was in the middle of the road.

“The first car had series front end damage and engine all leaking from where the quad impacted. Few cars pulled over to help.”

The witness claimed that three police cars were at the scene, one of them unmarked. There wasn’t ambulances present at the time the witness was there but it is believed the person on the quadbike was getting assistance from members of the public.
