Devastating fire tears through Derby buildings

A large fire broke out and affected two industrial estate buildings on a busy Derby road this morning. Six fire crews were on the scene on London Road, with two aerial ladder platforms also attending when the blaze first broke out at around 4.30am on Sunday morning (June 12).

The road was shut for around 10 hours in total and was initially closed between its junctions with Ascot Drive and Raynesway while firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze, with people advised to avoid the area. The fire affected the Navigation Tyre Service and Hand Car Wash and the Opulent Motors garage next door.

In a Twitter update at 5.30am, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “@DerbyshireFRS are currently dealing with a large fire on London Road in the Wilmorton area. We have 6 appliances and 2 Aerial ladder platforms in attendance. The road has been closed, please avoid the area.”

The fire had been largely extinguished by around 8am, but crews remained at the scene at lunchtime as fire investigation teams inspected the damage and the police started their own investigation into the cause of the incident.

A large stretch of the road was initially shut off between its junctions with Ascot Drive and Raynesway. A small section of London Road from Ascot Drive to Alvaston Park remained closed until around 3pm this afternoon.
