A Shuswap-area man who secretly delivered sex toys to a young relative he was attempting to lure could spend more than a year behind bars.
Christopher Klix’s sentencing hearing began last week in B.C. Supreme Court. The 29-year-old pleaded guilty last summer to one count of invitation to sexual touching.
Court heard Klix has since moved to Manitoba, but he was living during the summer of 2019 in the Malakwa area near Sicamous with his wife and their young family.
In July of 2019, a 13-year-old relative visited Malakwa from out of province to spend a couple of weeks with family in the area. The young teen was staying in a home near Klix’s family and she was spending time with his kids.
The girl told police Klix approached her one day while she was playing with his children and began whispering sexual comments in her ear, which carried over into a text message conversation.
Crown prosecutor Sheron O’Connor described the conversation in detail, saying Klix asked the girl about her sexual history and past relationships.
“Mr. Klix would then provide her with advice with respect to those issues,” O’Connor said.
“Ultimately, it goes into Mr. Klix telling her he likes her and that he had not had sex in months.”
O’Connor said Klix then attempted to normalize significant age gaps in relationships, telling the girl he knew a 30-year-old man who was dating a 13-year-old girl.
Court heard he sent the teen a photo of his erect penis and asked her to be his girlfriend.
O’Connor said Klix also offered the girl his wife’s sex toys and secretly dropped off multiple sex toys to the girl, which she hid in her luggage. The devices were later discovered by her family.
No sexual contact is alleged to have taken place, court was told.
O’Connor asked B.C. Supreme Court Justice Sheri Donegan to impose a jail sentence in the range of 12 to 18 months, to be followed by a 24-month probation order with conditions requiring Klix complete sex-offender treatment and barring him from having any contact with children or dating anyone with children. He would also be prohibited from deleting his internet history.
Lawyers will meet on Monday to set a date for the continuation of Klix’s sentencing hearing. He remains free on bail.
